Carmack said a while back that the PS3 version had higher res textures because the 360 version needed to be compressed to fit on two DVD's. Now the 360 version is going to be on 4 DVD's. I am guessing that Microsoft waived the multi-disc fee in order to avoid having the "inferior" version (especially since 360 is generally regarded as being better with textures than PS3, so that would be an embarrassment). If the issue you mentioned is related, then yes, it seems to have been at ...

I think what happened with that game (just a guess), is that they set it up for a sequel, but were disappointed with the sales. Rather than completely scrapping plans for a sequel, they release the "Epilogue" as DLC to tie off the story and pay for the work that had already been done toward a sequel.

I think DLC is analogous to a "director's cut" DVD. As long as it is taking something that is already a full experience and adding more to that, it's good for everyone. The Lord of the Rings movies were made with a theatrical version and the "extended edition" in mind from the start. You could buy the regular DVD's and watch great movies, or you could pay more to get more.

You could also look at DLC as bing a sort of "micro-sequel." judge a game ...

I'm pretty sure this will be successful. They're being proactive by already preparing DLC to add to what will surely be an excellent game.

Edit: see my comment above that compares this to the Lord of the Rings extended edition DVD releases.

I think it depends on the case. Uncharted 2 certainly has enough content in it already to be worth $60. The single player alone would be worth it to me. DLC is a way for them to get more return on their investment by utilizing the already existing engine and assets to create new content that they can charge for. I still say that most of the time, DLC is stuff that would not otherwise have been available at all, except that with DLC as an option, they can make money by giving us more. Kin...

Do developers intentionally hold back content that would have been put into the game so that they can charge for it, or is the DLC stuff that wouldn't have been put into the game otherwise (cost/benefit for the publisher & developer)? We will never know the answer to that question, and it may be different for every case.

As i recall, the complaints there are about the developer having to hold back content to fit the game on DVD, then releasing that content later as DLC. I don't usually agree with that argument, just trying to clear up what i see as a misunderstanding.

It could be argued that we got complete games, but didn't get "extras." Kinda like when movies were on VHS we rarely got "bonus features," but DVD opened up that possibility.

This is how I look at DLC. If the retail game has enough to warrant a purchase, I will buy it. If DLC comes out that I feel is worth the price, I will buy it. Look at them each on their own terms, as if the DLC is a "micro-sequel" that gets added right into the original game. Should we not buy Uncharted 2 at all because it all should have been in the original game?

@ Yi-Long: I don't understand your view. The game has no less content now than it did when you were ...

Blu-ray actually DOES have an improvement over DVD, where in all but a few cases multi-plats are essentially the same on both consoles.

Why is it that whenever someone talks about PS3 outselling the 360 in Europe, Europe is "insignificant," but Finland alone proves that Blu-ray is a failure?

What makes you say that Natal can recognize any object? That kid with the skateboard? I'll give you that that is possible, but it's only a software thing that could be done by any thing with a camera attached. Sony has actually recently patented technology that allows them to use 3D tracking of objects other than their "wands," too.

Natal can do the 3D body tracking, but other than that PSEye can do everything Natal can, and in many cases has been able to for years. ...

It's just one more way to add to the experience.

I would have nothing against ThatGameCompany making something for the 360, after all, Flower has moved the medium a little closer to art in my opinion, but this article is grasping at straws. I can think of no reasonable argument that can take what was said and infer that they are going to make something for Natal. It's just too big a leap.

So, when you say "I'm sure Yoga instructors and students like it but I sure don't," is that supposed to be some kind of insult saying that people who are making themselves more intelligent might like it?

Star Wars can be looked at as a study of the nature of evil and how a good person can turn to it. The prequels add more to that theme.

There's a lot more to Star Wars than special effects, Jedi, and "laser swords." I don't see any videogame storyline, especiallyone from a FPS, to match the complexities of Star Wars. In terms of popularity, maybe, but never in the story it tells. We're talking about a story that has gotten a Smithsonian exhibit here (and yes, the exhibit was about the story and how it is adapted from the classic "hero's tale," not about it as a pop culture phenomenon).

PS3 is a premium product at a premium price. If Sony released a "slim" model that had some features removed and targeted it toward "entry-level" consumers at a lower price, it could work well for them. I don't know how much money could be saved by these, but they could put in a smaller harddrive just for game save data and a couple installs at a time, remove wi-fi, and perhaps remove bluetooth, requiring controllers to be connected via USB (would still use the same contr...

If not for the platinum trophy hanging out in front of me, i wouldn't have played Bioshock or Uncharted on the hardest difficulty. Usually once i get the story i'm done with a game (except for certain games, 4 playthroughs of MGS4), but Bioshock was very rewarding on Survivor difficulty. Trophies/achievements can also encourage using new tactics like getting "environmental kills" or using weapons or combos you otherwise wouldn't.

Some can just be stupid, though. A se...

For that part in the church, you can actually go back out the door. That creates a bottleneck so that enemies can only come at you from one place. Still takes a few tries, but it worked well for me. A similar tactic worked on the second section of the last chapter. After you jump over the crates and trigger the enemies, jump back over the crates to where you can creep around the corner a little at a time.

Actually a good tip in general for crushing: use their aggressiveness ...
